AZM HONORS MACHAL
RECOGNIZES MILTON SHULMAN and AVRUM ISRAEL “IZZY” WEINZWEIG
In 1948, when the newly proclaimed State of Israel was
faced with its War of Independence, more than 4,000
men and women from around the world came to Israel to
fight alongside Tzahal, the Israel Defense Force.
Collectively known as Mitnavdei Chutz La’aretz, “Volunteers from Outside the Land,”
MACHAL volunteers were recognized by David Ben Gurion as the Diaspora’s most
important contribution to the survival of the State of Israel at its beginning.
Two of those volunteers were Milton Shulman and Avrum Israel “Izzie”
Weinzweig. After serving with Israel in the 1948 War, they then pursued
distinguished academic careers in Chicago, while continuing their service to the State
of Israel through energetic and productive volunteer careers in Zionist leadership,
highlighted by their successive and successful presidencies of the American Zionist
Movement Chicago.
Transpose the letters of MaChaL, mem-chuf-lamed, and you get ChaLoM, dream.
Coincidence? or bashert? Milt and Izzy continue to dream the dream, and to
transmit it to the visionaries of the new generation of Zionists in AZM’s recently
formed Dor Hemshech, the Continuing Generation. It is with great pleasure and
appreciation that AZM Chicago honors Machal and recognizes Izzie Weinzweig and
Milt Shulman for their lifelong commitment to Zionism and Israel.
